undone

for the illustration friday theme i thought of the sweater song off weezer's blue album, also called undone. the first thing i actually thought of was using ctrl+z or command+z but i guess i'm not inventive enough to illustrate that satisfactorily. i was also actually going to keep more to the lyrics of the weezer song and draw her bare ass and legs but this was a little more interesting to me.

have a nice christmas and new year's everyone.

outside the bars

i'm still working out the process so i thought i'd take a shortcut and reference a photo i found online (and the purists shiver!). i think i would've liked a slightly more textured background but what can i say? i'm still figuring a few things out. i fiddled with this more than i intended to so i just drew the line. elliott smith, hand drawn, then coloured digitally.

the portraits and such that i've been doing in my sketchbooks seem to have gotten a nice response but i doubt i'd ever be asked to do something like that for the editorial illustration jobs that i think i'd like to get. and so i'm going to embark on a bunch of experiments to figure out how best to go about fully illustrating pieces in a way that i'm happy with.

it's been interesting so far. i'm convinced that i will never be a photoshop guru but i don't think i want to be. the number of things that seem to be possible doesn't seem to have a limit. to boot, i don't find a lot of the ways to do these things very intuitive but maybe i'm just a r'tard. besides, i love the tangibility of hand drawing and inking or painting the base and then finishing off the colour digitally. illustrators of old must've been gods without the tools that seem to be standard today.

anyway this is the first little test. this didn't actually take me that long but maybe you can tell already by how appalled you probably are at it. ha ha.

corvus part deux

so apparently i can't ever think something is done but i'm definitely going to have to learn to do that. i'm happier with the above product. the concept is still there and is (i think) stronger...not to mention more aesthetically pleasing? i've actually been asked about prints here and there so i've had that at the back of my mind for a little while. i figured as an exercise, i'd show part of the process and meaning behind the logo in a print friendly layout. the two arrangements i'm liking are below.

corvus

if you've been following along at all (and for this i shall say very flatteringly say thanks), then you could probably have guessed that i have a slight fascination with ravens. i'm so very interested in graphic design and the question was actually raised to me that were i to have my own little illustrative design type of shop, what would my logo be? well, behold (or scoff at) the first iteration for that. i will probably tweak this some more but i can already see a host of ways to vary this, to which i'm nerding out at the mere possibility. i'm a loser. it's true.
